Community Garden Mornings (Workdays)

September 21 @ 4:04 am

Join our willing band of volunteer gardeners for our monthly tidy and nurture of our churches community garden. No skills are necessary, just a willingness to get stuck in. Our head gardener, Kath, who is garden manager at Harlow Carr will be happy to show you the ropes, and point you at a suitable job.

We gather in the log-cabin halfway through the morning, but it is generally a lovely sociable time, whatever the weather!

Community Cinema

March 14, 2020 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm GMT

Coronavirus Update: While restrictions are in place, we will obviously not be meeting, but as soon as they lift, we will continue with our screenings.

Acomb Community Cinema was established in 2016, in response to an overwhelmly positive response from our community for such a provision.

Since then, with the help of a small band of volunteers we’ve been running monthly on the second Saturday of each month, and over 90 people gather each time to watch a newly released film.

For copyright reasons we cannot display the film titles on our website, but you will get details at each film, and they are on display within the foyer of Acomb Methodist Church. We tend to pick films that will make you think, but have had musicals, thrillers, comedy, action – you name it!

The cinema is free, but we sell hot drinks and snacks which helps us cover our costs, and continue to invest in our premises…we were recently able to fund new chairs for example.

The films are aimed at adults, so may be unsuitable for children, but in any case we ask any children attending to be accompanied by an adult.

Board Game Church

May 3, 2020 @ 8:00 am 5:00 pm BST

Download a Printable Flyer

Board Game Church Poster

Board Game Church is for adults and their children aged 7 and over (Year 3 and up at school) who enjoy board games – and by that we mean not just the traditional Scrabble and Monopoly, but also the newer more complex board games like Carcassone, and Ticket to Ride – and well much newer still…the list goes on and on.

It would be really helpful, for catering purposes, if you could let us know that you are attending, and any dietary preferences (also if there are any planned changes).

WHAT FORM WILL IT TAKE?

We start the worship at 4:00pm, but there are drinks and biscuits, and short play games available from 3:30pm.

Once refreshed we’ll have a short game-based activity, to help us get to know one another.
Following that, we’ll have a time of worship, seeking to learn of Jesus, but with a game theme.
Following that we’ll spend at least an hour simply playing board games with one another.
After that we’ll share a simple meal, i.e. fish finger sandwiches, jacket potatoes, pizza or hot dogs (or dietary alternatives). Finally we’ll have a game-based prayer time, where we will pray for one another, our community and our world. We aim to finish by 6:00pm.

What will the afternoon be like. We aim to mix, playing board games and sharing in some food, with a time of worship, where we’ll get to know one another, pray, and look at scripture with a gamers eye!

CAN ANYONE JOIN?

With the agreement of parents, we are now able to welcome younger children (aged 7+, or year 3 at school or over) to this family activity. The children do need to be accompanied by an adult though please. We’ll all be playing in the same room, and we have games appropriate for different age levels – including some complex ones for adults.

HOW MUCH IS IT?

We are aiming to cover the costs of food and room hire and ideally create a surplus to purchase new games. A freewill offering will be taken with this in mind.

SO I NEED TO BRING A BOARD GAME?

We’ve accumulated a good number of games, but if you have a favourite, however, feel free to bring it along. Please bear in mind our time constraints.

CONTACT US

As we mentioned, it would be really helpful if you could let us know you are coming, so we can cater appropriately. To do so, or for other queries, please contact Andy on (01904)784545 or email using the contact form.

Zoom on Sunday (Virtual Worship)

June 7, 2020 @ 10:30 am 11:30 am BST

With the restrictions of Corona Virus, Acomb Methodist in partnership with its sister church at Southlands Methodist have moved online, using Zoom Video Conferencing.

Our worship, starts with a song, and then draws on some prayers from the Northumbria Community, before watching a short video suitable for the kids. We then look together at a Bible Passage, as the kids enjoy their own activities, before moving into a time of prayer, and then finish with a short blessing and a final song.

Most people then linger for cirtual coffee, and chat – and we split into geographical areas, or physical church links at that point.

The service is interactive, but you need a Zoom account (free) on a suitable device, ideally with a camera and microphone. You’ll need to either click the following link, or on some devices – select join meeting and type in the number and password.

Adventurers

June 7, 2020 @ 10:30 am 11:30 am BST

Our adventurers group, which caters from babes in arms (creche), through to a separate teenagers group offers a focussed time of worship and learning alongside the morning service at Acomb Methodist church.

The young groups are story and craft focussed, using Scripture Union materials.  We also have a teenagers group called Navigators, that go into more depth with scripture and hot potato issues.

The group usually join the main act of worship for a short time during the morning, but then break out for their own activities.   If your children have enjoyed Messy church, then they will love our Adventurers groups too.   Parents are asked to join the main service (or help in the group), as we sometimes need to call on Mum and Dad!

It is led by a talented group of volunteers who are DBS cleared.
